WHAT I’M LOOKING AT TODAY… Alan Aldridge

8:05 pm Blog, art

Most of you may already know this artist but I want to post it up because I never seem to get bored of his art. He was made uber famous by his work with The Beatles. Aldridge visually defined a generation and although he wasn’t the only one doing art in this style, he was deff one one of the more significant. Just bought an old copy of his book The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics today and thought I’d share.  Oh, and I found out he has a major retrospective coming up at the Design Museum in London in the fall. Can’t wait.

Thanks for sharing, anything colourful catches my eye! lol. I have to admit, I’m not a big Beatles’ fan (I know, shock, horror, I may have lost all credibility with anyone who reads this, but they’re just not my cup of tea..) but this artwork really is wonderful.
Always nice to hear your opinion :)

I love the one with the bunny, that little beetle is just too cute for words.
In a kinda spooky way of course, but still cute.

What confuses me here is your phrase:
“Just bought an old copy of his book The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics today and thought I’d share”.

Mikaaaaaaaaaaaaa, get your arsey back into that recording studio right now, do you hear me?

That is so amazing!! especially the baby and the tears falling while transforming into something else, and the revolution one is tight!

I am a HUGE fan of the beatles, but I have never seen them from a visual aspect, besides Beatles Love from Cirque Du Soleil

this was an awesome blog! something interesting to ponder and look at from an abstract or different way, the bags were a bit too obvious to intrigue my mind other than “oh cool” :)

I like the ‘revolution’ drawing because it’s very colourful and the letters are curly and also the rabbit (!?) with the accordion is cool (I can play that instrument a little) Are you going to his exposition the fall?

Le dessin sur “all you need is love” des Beatles me fait penser à ceux de “Life in Cartoon Motion” !

This is really far out man! Incredibly evocative of the 60’s and still wonderful to look at. If all of these are by Aldridge they are quite diverse in style but all full of imagination.
Methinks I will have to try to get to see this retrospective in the Autumn….

    See you anon, Love Rxx

Okay so maybe I’m living under a rock, but I hadn’t heard of Alan Aldridge before. So thank you for sharing this!

Call me crazy, but I can see a lot of his influence on the LICM artwork - unless that’s just one huge koinkydink?

That’s got to be one of the best things about living in London town; all the museums and exhibits and such. Sigh. This one-horse prairie town I live in could only dream of being so cultured.

    Hey MIKA!

While I wasn’t familiar with Aldridge’s work, I’m really glad that you’ve posted some of it, thus allowing me and others, I’m sure, to discover this artist’s work.

I am particularly in love with his crying baby, whose tears become fish (that’s just terrific!), and his musical bunny rabbit (or is that a hare?), with a rooster who’s wearing a vest, and a clown-faced bug, holding a jester-on-a-stick!

I especially like just how wonderfully detailed, and brilliantly saturated with colour his work is!

Thanks for this lovely discovery! I’m just sorry for not being able to attend his upcoming retrospective, although I’m hoping that when the time comes, you’ll post something about it.

    Love,

    Dragana

P.S.: I really loved yesterday’s blog about the shopping bags; they were all great, but I particularly liked the skipping rope ones! Thanks!

    Mika,

I am so excited to see some Beatles pics there!

The Beatles are a big part of my life. I own most of their music.
Ive told you this before, bu you and the Beatles have influenced my life and my music more than anything else.
Today, actaully, I was in a music shoppe and saw a Beatles album called
“TAKE IT EASY! The Beatles gone loungecore!”
I thought…OMG! Its called TAKE IT EASY! If only mika could see this….

also i was in a candy shoppe with lots of GIANT LOLLIPOPS! hehe, thought of you!

I always loved the cartoon versions of The Beatles, such as the ones above in your blog….and Im so excited to see that you appreciate them aswell.
The first tiem I heard the end of “Instant Martyr” with the “Here comes the sun little darling” part, I instantly freaked out. I thought…MIKA AND THE BEATLES! WHAT AN OUTSTANDING COMBINATION!

Mika, you would sound incredible doing some Beatles covers. Please think it over!

    Peace,love,music….

    and love always…..

Hi Mika! My name is Pilar, I’m 15 years old and I have studied harp for eight years in a music school so, I think that I can give a humble opinion about your music. I love it, it’s very special and nowadays there aren’t not many bands or singer with a classical music influences. I want to praise you because of all of your compositions are very different and when, for example, I’m going shopping and, suddenly, Mika sounds…it makes me happy!!! I think that when someone feels the music in this way it’s very beautiful and it’s because of music it’s a part of his life.

Sorry about my horrible English!!! Also congratulation for your site, it’s very cool and interesting and here I discovered “Wonder pets” because in Spain I’ve never seen them! And I want to see you soon in Madrid because I couldn’t go to your performance in Saturday Night Fiber.

You have luck of could go the exhibition, where I live it is rare exhibitions of famous artists although there is a great cultural production. Ah!

    THAT BEAUTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excuse if I have not been greeted immediately, but these images are wonderful to take the breath away!!! are the triumph of vitality in various forms,
adopt a special light, almost dazzling, the colors are very bright and skillfully combined,in a surreal and fairy context, are a dream. The first image is my favorite because is very bright and represent the spring (my favourite season)under the background of an abstract sun. They are a feast for the eyes, tonight you have me done a great gift!!!THANK YOU!!!

Awwww, Beatles and Mika all together! Who could ask for more? Of course I’m familiar to Aldridge’s work, in fact my father always reminds me he was a favourite of mine when I was only 4, now talking about being precocious! (is that right, btw?).

Once again, thank you, gracias, shukran ;)

    ¡Besos!

Tu as dépassé mon Maître Mika! C’est un peu étrange tout ça…To be continued, i hope!

    Hey Mika.
If you went out today, it means that your stomach goes better! I’m happy for you.
In Colmar, last year, you said “je ne connais rien des hippies…
I loved this interview (I always love when you speak and explain).
BUT, today, I see that you know hippies, because this artist is a pure product of them.
His art looks like your world. It’s colored, joyful and symbolic.
I love this artist but what I love most of all, it’s YOUR world!!!!
    Merci Mika :)

    coucou!

He he he j’écoutais les Beatles dans le métro aujourd’hui… Coincidence!

Hey Mika, I had an idea!
I and my friend were watching “Moulin Rouge”, the musical. We heard “Your Song” and we said: “Hey, would be fantastic if Mika sang this song”. So, my idea is this, try to sing “Your Song”, Mika, it would be fantastic in my opinion!

CIAO MIKA, here I am again!I forgot to tell that much I admire the BEATLES even if they do not belong to my age, I think their music has marked a genuine musical “era” that still inspires contemporary songwriters today (I also believe you),images that I have commented previously are some of the covers of their songs (some do not know!)such as the first (my favourite)I knew not at all, well, I learned something new…
This time really goodnight!MARI AND SONS.
