ROYAL SYMPATHY BAND HEADS
August 16, 2008 4:56 pm Blog, artIf you came to the Paris show on the 4th of July, you would have seen a marching band of giant clowns parading on the stage during Billy Brown. Many people have been asking about what they were and for some pics. I also took one of my clowns with me on tour after Paris to do a little tap dancing during Stuck In The Middle.
The Clown heads were made in London and designed by Es Devlin with costumes done by my sister Paloma and my mum. Here are Es’ original sketches for the heads. I find these drawings really beautiful and thought I would share! If I had a restaurant I would have a troupe of these clowns as the doormen, car valet and receptionist. Seriously, it would be great.

Clowns really scare me… they have an eerie strange look that I just can’t trust… fake smile with sad face is very frightening… only gives me more of a reason not to feel comfortable or trust them… that make up is hiding something really nasty inside
But, I have to admit that yours are a little less scary but I still wouldn’t call them cute.
I appreciate all the effort done behind the costumes…am sure a lot of people will find them fascinating… me on the other hand, still a little disturbed by the whole theme… but loved your concerts… you pulled it with your voice, energy and sense of humor

Leur nervosité me plaît!!
Ps: Mais à quoi correspondent ces chiffres? les dimensions?

Those sketches are amazing! And that’s just the sketches..
The final product is an explosion of magnificence.
And if that was a restaurant, psssccht, that would be the most awesome restaurant EVER.
People should be more creative in making restaurants.. Most of them have just a brown shade of walls and chairs and tables. But, I haven’t been to every restaurant in the world so, I wouldn’t know.
Haha…

Hello Mika,
I regret that I was not at Paris, but I have seen many pictures of the clown tapping during SITM. I would like to talk with you, why this clown is bearing a sad face.. is it like: Yes, there are not so good ways and happenings during life, but after all we should stay with a smile, with colours on our clothes?
But no, this clown isn’t looking happy - he has a story to tell - on the foto you touch the clown face with cautious hands - I don’t know what the clown is telling you all, but it’s more than me..
Have a good evening!

Mxxx,
I saw this crazy version of “relax” on youtube and thought that you’d REALLY enjoy it. It was performed by a brazilian band called “L’os Clodos” in the Folcloric festival of a city called “Passo Largo”.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqYVHmKJ-6k
hope you see it and have a little bit of fun with it. =]
take care,
rafael dip
[saying once again that i'm the brazilian guy who was in the ny concert at terminal 5, in february, haha, and that my ancestors are lebanese!]

I was at the Paris gig, it was the best gig i’ve ever seen, and i’ve seen quite a few !! These clows were awesome, it remminded me of the characters in my storybooks when i was a little girl, and the whole atmosphere of the show was magical.
Merci, merci, merci, j’ai eu des étoiles dans les yeux pendant des semaines après ce concert !!! (et j’en ai encore !!)

I love drawing and I always want to draw something different that no one has seen. But Sometimes I am not as Original as I would like. From the look of these pictures your sister and mom are very orginal, even though its they’re pictures of clowns, there is something so different that I find absolutely wonderful!

i did love them at the parc des prince, thx for telling more!
if you had a restaurant, i would definitively go to take a picture with your guyz. BUT i’m not sure i will go to eat (last time, i had dinner at a libanese restaurant in london and i got sick…. :s)
it depends: are you as good as cooking than at music?

With a theatre on top of the restaurant where the top opened up and you could see the stars and the moon and huge pots of overflowing flowers and really comfy chairs with an outside glass elevator to get up there!

I really liked the marching band clowns in Paris, they were brilliant.
It did make me wonder watching them, how did the heads stay on? I take it that the material they were made from was quite light, but I couldn’t figure out how what kept them from falling off!
sue ann :

Hello Mika,
yes the drawings are beautiful. The clowns remind me a little bit to the character of Stephen King´s ” It “. Since I read ” It ” it gives me a creeps, when I see clowns. But your clowns look much nicer than It.
Have a good weekend

however, i’ve already seen your clowns in paris and i’m glad that you share them here. they look overwhelming. how much does such a head weight?
i’d def have dinner in such a restaurant where the doormen have clown costumes, would remind me of the surreal circus world, kinda fascinating.

I used to hate clowns, they scared me when I was a kid, and even now sometimes…but you make me feel a little more comfortable with them, maybe I begin to know them better.
I’m still kind of scared but, I understand how fascinating clowns could be for you, always this mix between joy and sadness, so mysterious for the others but so necessary at the same time.
I’m a pessimistic (sorry for the word…Is it ok??) person who’s learning from you and your Art to find some hope and hapiness in every situations.
That’s brand new for me!
