WHAT I’M LOOKING AT TODAY; MARCEL DZAMA

4:07 pm Videos

If I was to get a tattoo it would probably be a character by Marcel Dzama. Some of you may already know of him from his album cover for Beck’s Guerro. He is a truly original artist from Canada who tends to merge and mutate people and animals creating something in between the two. His creatures are terrifying and adorable at the same time.

It is because marcel Dzama’s characters are not quite human that they are able to do strange things. From the playful and violent to the sexual, yet still get away with it.  I was always turned off by art history as a student.  I felt it was time that could be spent drawing or experimenting instead of writing essays about long gone art heroes.  Now however, I wish I could put more knowledgeable words to describe what some art makes me feel. I guess you could call this art surreal. All I know for sure is that even if his work is dark or sad its always playful and draws me in.

i always loved art but it pissed me off when in school we were told to draw birds or flowers so eventually after having to stand outside class in school for refusing to draw shit for years i gave up drawing :-(
i do love these drawings though esp the 3rd 1 down where the guy is being hanged & the woman with the tree stump on her head it made me laugh ,do i seem sick in the head for chuckling ? …. maybe i am lol

Mika, i loved those drawings…and I really like the cover of Guerro :D

I like those things that are a bit apart from reality, it has his of magic, and something of uncommon, just like some music and specially your music…

Those designs are really nice for tattoos, though I really like the one I already have. I was thinking of a second one with a Dawack style, still not decided the final drawing choice yet :)

As long as you don’t get tattooed someone else’s initials…that’s not good at all. Not that I’m jealous, it’s NOT really a good choice

    suerte! besos

I had to laugh at this one becuse it reminded me of when I was younger my brother and I used to create and draw little mystical creatures. Most of them were a merge of human and animal. We obsessed with cats though so they featured in most of our pics. I never would have thought of them as tattoos!
I guess these would be very different!
Im still baffled as to how you find these things!

Cool! I had to do this thing at school where you had to morph different parts of bugs like, spiders, caterpillars, scorpions, etc. Mine look freaky and someone said that the head of bug look like a bum! I burst out laughing, and my art teacher was behind me. If i got a tatoo it would be you meeks, but have a fear of needles and im not old enough yet. I hate being 13!

The first drawing makes me laugh, I mean the contrast of naked/not naked and with/without bowknot thing seem very interesting. But it is difficult for me to speak out the exact story the drawings wanna tell.I guess this is what good art is:always stimulate people’s imagination, but not define the answer ever.

The first one is my favorite, it reminds me of the dragon you had in Paris. Well, this is not a dragon, I can see, lol. You like things that are a little bit sad and playful at the same time, don’t you? Art like this makes me think, I like it. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve always thought if i ever did get a tattoo…it would have to be one that meant something to me…a tattoo is so ‘final’ .. to commit to it and not regret it after, it would have to be something that you identify with…ive never really fancied the tattoo as an ‘accesory’…ive been toying with the idea of tattooing a small pheonix on my left inner wrist for some time now…more so prolly these few turbulent years…In terms of artists and unique characters, for me there is Tim Burton. I just absolutely adore him…no matter what he draws, no matter how dark and bleak..there is always that underlying innocence that i know stems from within him…i can relate to that coz i too still retain an inner innocence…ive always thought his characters being dark and innocent alike…prolly represent that ‘rude awakening’ that you go thru when you figure out that the world is not truly benign..that its full of contradictions…his films have the same ‘flavour’… love him.

If you were to get a tatoo…what are you trying to say? :P

This artist reminds me of something, I can’t think what though…
You took the words out of my mouth about Art history, I used to fall asleep when we did this, and like you would have preffered to be doing something than reading about other artists. But I used to love watching video documentaries about other artists, than reading about them.
So you studied art? I’d love to know more about that, I love art so much!

The little elephant child in the second picture under the text is cute, weird but cute. And why do they only have one foot each?!lol

Oh and ever consider an Andy Warhol blog? I’d love to know what you think of him.

    Thanks again!

bizarre drawings , i like to know what he meant with them. i’ve had arthistoruy too but we had to learn more about buildings. it was very boring at the time, i’d rather spend that time on making things. we didn’t only draw but we also created things and my teacher didn’t like me because i never listened to his advice because i knew i was right. and he never admitted that. i wish i could show him what i make now. i wonder if he still disaprooves

I love surrealism… Dalí, Miró… It’s like to put different worlds together, in a crazy way… Anyway, words can’t tell us everything. I writte a lot (I’m trying to write a novel) and there are a lot of things I can’t describe with words. You has to feel them… Words only are useful to comunicate with each other… If you want to live, you has to feel it, not to read it.

as for the drawings…they’re a bit tooo dark for my taste ( DON’T TURN EMO, MIKA! )…I got used to DaWack’s colourful world… :D

    Salut!

    Hmm..

Well, if you were to get a tattoo of one of his drawings, it’d definitely be different.

I think if anything, his drawings are so unusual that they make people stop and just think about what’s going on, which is better than a quick glance and no appreciation.

Your description of Marcel Dzama’s Art is totally right to me.

nothing to add, just want to say that you seems to be a very sensitive person.
particularly touched by Art…who’s finding the right words to explain what you feel in the front of an artcraft. It’s so difficult to me…

Do I have to say Thank you one more time?
    It became obviously now!

have a nice sunday and good time on your birthday monday. Hope you’ll share some moments with us…

That art is interesting and unique. If you did end up getting a tattoo of this man’s art, it would be pretty cool.

And I see he’s from Canada. Very nice :)

Oh! And in the last photo, I like how there’s a little face on the fan.

well…you should check out the book “Weiner Dog Art: A Far Side Collection” By: Gary Larson
its a personal favorite of mine..little comics then a 6 page spread of dachshund art…
Larson actually has a series of far side books.

Good evening Mr.Penniman, I note that in these days you’re putting “a lot of meat to fire” posting that topics, just right for me!!!(THANKS).
As you understand, I have a weakness for art in all its forms, because in my opinion:art=creativity=life..I admit that the designs that today we propose aren’t exactly the maximum for my tastes, both for the colors too soft and lifeless, both for the lines that are used for plot the subject of drawings.Hybrids that the artist uses for his works, seem drawn from the hieroglyphics of the Ancient Egyptians, witch I worship for their mystery, their majesty and genius,I agree, as you write, which are surreals (fortunately!!)and clearly hovers a thin “black humor” would call, in particular the 3rd design is almost macabre…If I want to make a tattoo using the themes of these drawings,I choose the red flowers present onto the tree on left in drawing 4rd, or
one of several owls behind these “scenes”.Photos that you portray are current or repertoire? That has happened to your angelic-curls!?!?!?!? YOU CUT THEM!?!?!?!? I hope not!!!Your birthday approaches, I could not send any gift why not know where to send it, but I’ll invent something, for now goodnight, a hundred kilograms of kissesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss, 4ever MARI AND SONS

    Dear Mika,

pfff, there are some creepy drawings at this blog from you, nr. 4 and 5 seems to me like you are remembering your school-time, and the bad experiences with the others in your class. Horrible feeling, the artist is shown his own experience in a simple picture, and is saying more than with words…

I’m very sorry for all who have to handle with such happenings… and have great respect for all who cope this experiences and don’t get down.

I’ve been glad that you never gave up and let you draw down by this unfair persons, they had not “win”, thanks god - and now I stop it, its going too pathetique! ;)

Have a good night and sleep well, I always wish the best for you.

Have you seen his new dioramas? My friend saw this exhibit in March and was really excited about them:

    http://www.davidzwirner.com/exhibitions/148/selected_works_1.htm

And as for being trained in art historical speak, take it from someone who has an art history degree among others. I think you get your point across perfectly well. Really good art speaks for itself anyway. If you had gone to London College of Fashion or one of its equivalents like Toronto’s OCAD and done history and studio concurrently, you probably wouldn’t have your love of art intact and your feelings would instead be ambivalent and slightly inured like mine. Although, I’m sure your friends have told you that already…

ps: no tats. too addictive, unless you’re a bit of a masochist. A friend of mine started with one or two and after she got the Moulin Rouge across her back we all stopped counting. xr

His art always reminded me of the characters from the cartoon version of The Lion Witch and The Wardrobe and another eerie cartoon movie from the 70’s or 60’s i can’t remember right now. Oooohh. maybe I’m thinking about this Japaneses Anime i watched a few years back called…Princess Monanoke or was it…never mind, i can’t remember. See what old age does to you? =P

I was looking at these pics for awhile trying to see the adorable side of them, and the only thing that i found remotely adorable was the thing that looks like a elephant pig with the red bow tie in the first picture. I see a lot of the terrifying though. Just wanted to try and see from your point of view.

I know that feeling, not having the words to completely express how different types of art makes you feel, it’s a bit frustrating.

I also had a hard time seeing the value in writing long essays about art. Although i did enjoying learning about the history behind artist dead or alive because i found it so intriguing but generally, i was always more of a hands-on learner.

I can create my own stories for the pictures, but i would love to hear what Marcel Dzama says about each of them, or the stories behind them.

I’m assuming he does all watercolor- very nice job with it.

I like the originality of each piece.

“All I know for sure is that even if his work is dark or sad its always playful and draws me in.”

That’s how I would describe your stuff.

My favorite tatoo I’ve ever seen is on my cousin — he had one of his 3 year old son’s drawings done.

All kids go through this particular drawing phase where they give everything a hundred stick arms — every time I see one, I think it should be a logo, or a tattoo!

    Mika,
I don’t usually respond to blogs but that little bit you said about art history in school has been poking me while i try to sit here and read my book so I feel compelled to say something. I took art history in high school and can’t seem to stay away from taking more classes at college. I love sitting there and traveling to all these crazy corners of time, history, perspective, drama, and everything that goes into studying art. I like that I don’t have to do anything, and I’m able to just let all these things wash over me. There’s genius in creativity but there’s also genius in just being an empty vessel that can absorb all these things. In my college essay, I wrote about how I admired your music because it pays homage to the timeline that has been built before you but brings it somewhere else and seems to be an interpretation as much as a creation. ox

Another analogous artist you may find appealing is Amy Cutler.

Not sure whether you’d connect with her themes–as they are slightly different–but she’s on the same folk/Magritte/Hieronymus Bosch (with less of the naive) wavelength as Marcel, and plays with horror and humour…xr

This is my fav image of hers (because there’s an elephant):

Je ne connaissais pas cet artiste et j’aime énormément ce genre d’univers assez sombre! J’ai toujours été fasciné par ça!
J’adore plus particulièrement le dessin numéro 3! Il est sobre et très noir! Et dans les autres c’est assez troublant avec ses personnages mi-humains mi-animaux! J’adore tout simplement!

I’ve become a fan of your blogs en vlogs! They are definitely addictive. I love your artblogs and I always read the comments because everybody’s recommending these cool artists that I’ve never heard of or forgotten about. I’m now going to watch Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (haven’t seen it in years). So whoever posted that thnx for the tip!

I think Marcel Dzama’s work is amazing. Didn’t now the Guero album cover was his work. Although some of his pictures are quite scary and dark, they appeal to me and I can look at them for a long time and still discover new things!

Have a nice birthday tomorrow and I wish you lots of succes with the recording of your 2nd album!

Hey, an interesting artwork of Marcel Dzama!! I think the mutant people personify the conflicting nature of all of us. This raw (animally), but genuine and childish side influence the individual creativity. (like “Der Steppenwolf” von Hermann Hesse)

    bye bye :)

  111. Gladys :

I on the other hand liked art history. I guess it depends on which teacher you had and what kind of assignement you did. We didn’t write essays, we looked at art, takled about it and then drawed based on our inspiration.

Do you have a tattoo? Where could it be? I’m not a big fan of them but if they are small and fun it’s ok. Otherwise it’s a big risk that you’ll get tired of them after a couple of years.

you know writing essays and experimenting are both necessary to be complete, many people only belong to one category when we are meant to be everything…on the other hand some essays are cover with dust, we have to burn them and reinvent another kind of essays, hybrid ones, yeah!

    but
you certainly dont need more words,

do you really have to know that what he does is actually called faux-naïf?no.

i read a lot about his art today and you were the one who xplained it the best:

“It is because marcel Dzama’s characters are not quite human that they are able to do strange things”

and please have a look at this, i love it and maybe you might like it, id like to put direct links to the ones i prefer but the server is off now.fck.

You’re perfect naturally. You’re above this kind of things…
    Please, change nothing on you.
    Tu vas t’abimer…
I’m stupid, I know, and certain fans are going to be angry against me but I don’t care…

Mika, please, please don`t get a tatoo. You`re enough special for not needing a picture on your skin and too special for doing somethng that so many people do as if it were different (it isn`t different anymore).

    Oooh, that’s amazing!

It seems to me like “male” version of some Blackall paintings, if I can put it that way. These are so witty, mysterious and dark at the same time.

    Thanks for posting them Mika!!

    Much love,

    Bojanaxxxx
