FLYING TREE OF LIFE
August 17, 2008 8:21 pm BlogHere’s another one of Es Devlin’s design sketches. This was also done for the Paris 4th of July show.
During my cover of “Just Can’t Get Enough” my singer Saranayde put on an enormous dress and started to fly up high into the air, as her dress beneath her kept getting bigger and bigger. The Idea was that Saranayde and my other singer Sam Smith (one being bigger than the other…) were having an argument about each other’s size. Saranayde feeling small then flies up and swarms the stage with this costume. In the end she ended up bigger than everything around her.
I don’t know if all of that came across on the night!! Hopefully it will be a lot clearer on the DVD that we are making. The original design however, included a headress that was suposed to be reflective of the tree of life on the Happy Ending Single art work (shown below). The headress was such a headache to get made. My mother had to send someone off to India a week before the show to get it done in time. The worst part of it is, that in the end it was to heavy to even be worn! At least the rehearsals were worth a few laughs!
Anyway, we have made a “Making of” for the Paris gig. That reveals the whole process, including all that went wrong! look out for the first few teasers, which will be shown exclusively on my blog in the next few weeks. In the meantime on the eve of my 25th… I leave you with another cool sketch by Es.

PS, Re my 25th. I thought it would be a nice idea to jump off some very high cliffs, (in a harness with ropes, obviously). So to avoid indulgent birthday tedium I have run off with friends and family to find some! hehehe

Je me souviens de Sarnayde dans cette robe qui grandissait au fur et à mesure, mais j’avoue que j’ignorais le sens qui s’y cachait derrière !
Hate de découvrir le DVD du Parc des Princes avec le making-off du spectacle ! Tout cela s’annonce très interessant !

I remember seeing the footage and I was like, is that Sarynade all the way up there? lol it looked like a major feat. The whole thing looked amazing and like a lot of work. I can’t wait for the DVD.

What can I say…That Happy Ending tree is one of my all time favourite DW designs, it’s sooo pretty and complex, and I’m obsessed with the cute little leaves.
When I went to see the exhibition at Blink last summer, I spent ages looking at the tree pictures in detail. Sad, yes, probably :o)
I can’t wait for the DVD!!! And I mean it.
It’s going to be great seeing the process, and also watching a decent recording of it from close up, as we didn’t get to see much from the catwalk area ,LOL!
Anyway have a FANTASTIC 25th!!! Make sure your harness is properly done up obviously, and post a video of you jumping, that would be cool to watch, hehe!

Forgot to say, it’s good to hear the story behind the Saranayde/Sam thing, as I was totally oblivious to it all when it happened in Paris.
Funny how one can have an idea, think that it’s clear as water, and yet the audience just don’t get it…Or maybe the audience did and it was just me, oh well. :o)

Ah can’t wait for the DVD to come out! This concert was so beautiful, I was amazed by this wonderful world. It was just overwhelming, there was so much to see eyes couldnt take it all in. And Saranayde in the air with this incredible dress was just WOAHHH!!!
Bon quart de siècle et bonnes sensations alors (à la montagne en France peut-être?)! J’ai un vertige de dingue donc je ne sais pas comment vous faites, vous les amateurs de sensations fortes !

J’avais effectivement remarqué que la robe de Saranayde grandissait au fur et à mesure qu’elle montait, mais je n’avais pas réalisé le sens qu’avait son ascension. Alors merci pour l’explication!
Et pour le DVD, je sens qu’on va bien rire…vivement qu’il sorte!!! ça va aussi me faire du bien de revoir ce fabuleux concert!
En ce qui concerne ton anniversaire (je ne veux pas te le souhaiter en avance…), je pense que c’est une super idée de sauter à l’élastique! Je l’ai déjà fait plusieurs fois, ça fait peur, mais c’est vraiment une sensation géniale!! je suis sure que tu vas adorer!

Quel spectacle!!! Saranayade était plus splendide!! j’ai hâte de voir la DVD pour ce rappeler de tous ces beau souvenirs! c’est drôle, je suis du 2 août, et pour mes 23 ans je vais sauter en parachute le31! J’hésitais entre le saut à l’élastique et en parachute! Mais la chute libre me branche plus mais surtout; il n’y a pas de retour en sens inverse à cause de l’élastique!!! lol

Merci pour l’explication concernant la « mutation » de la robe de Saranayde. Apparemment vous avez dû avoir pas mal de problèmes pour le concert du Parc des Princes: le dragon, le « headress »… En tout cas, malgré les nombreuses difficultés que vous semblez avoir eu, ça valait vraiment le coup parce que c’était un spectacle totalement fou et extraordinaire. Bref, un souvenir mémorable; j’ai hâte de voir le DVD.

Well now I’m relegated to using my phone which seems to take ages to download, I’ll get back to you on the sketches, but from where I was standing in Paris at the end of the walkway, couldn’t see the dress, so I guess I’ll have to check the DVD to get the effect.
Shame about the headdress though, but I guess Sara was relieved, ha ha!
By the way, when the DVD comes out, I’ll be looking to become a hermit living in a cave, for reasons you know very well. On your extensive travels, you didn’t happen to come across any nice cosy ones did you? LOL!!!

I wish I had been at the 4th July Paris gig (or any or your gigs for that matter - must rectify that when you next tour!!).
The insights you give about the creative process, in this case for that gig and that particular costume, are really interesting. I already have saved as favourites on my YouTube account the vids of your ‘making of’ your videos for ‘Happy Ending’ (which I particularly love) and ‘Love Today’.
‘Behind the scenes’ stuff is a never-ending source of fascination, maybe because when I was at school I loved acting/dancing and performing(this sounds really lame when I recall that I am blogging with a world-famous musical performer/artist!!)For me the ‘backstage’ production bit was just as exciting as the being on the stage itself for the actual performance/s.
I know even for humble school productions how much work goes on the production/design etc to make the show/play go well on the night/s, so it must be a huge undertaking for an imaginative and very energetic show such as yours.
With our school plays it was always such a joy to see how everything came together (mostly!) in the end. I still have a love of anything theatrical (I’m an actress manque!), or that involves performance of whatever medium.
So, really looking forward to the new ‘Making of’ vid for the Paris gig. Very exciting - will add it to my collection (well, the one DVD I have of yours already, ‘Live in Cartoon Motion’ which I enjoyed watching immensely). As for Es’s drawing the headress does look rather ambitious!! Lovely drawing though.
Anyway, Mika, wishing you a great day for the 18th. Have fun, but be careful on those cliffs (and hope the weather is kind to you wherever you are! Hope you’re not camping…?)!!

I can’t believe how intricate and well thought out every little detail of the Paris show was. I’m really in awe of how much effort you and “Team Mika” put into it… astonishing, and very theatrical! So much more than just a concert.
The sketch is beautiful.

Haaa quel moment magnifique!!Saranayde était sublime dans cette robe, l’effet était vraiment réussi visuellement…si mes souvenirs sont bons le tissu m’avait particulièrement frappé : il semblait si fin, aérien …Bref un des grands moments de ce show c’est certain!! Merci mille fois pour nous faire partager tout ça!!!
PS : Haa oui l’idée de l’arbre de Happy Ending!! J’ai hâte de voir ce DVD juste pour voir tout les préparatifs!! Je suppose qu’il y a eu des ratés, des choses qui n’ont pas pu se faire mais au final ce spectacle était vraiment grandiose, parfait!!
PS: Profite bien de cette petite pause à sensations fortes!!
