ROOMS WITHOUT WINDOWS

11:47 am Blog

It doesn’t feel like a Wednesday night. As I sit here in the studio in London, I am trying to figure out where the past few days have gone. The biggest problem is the lack of daylight.  Whether its 10 am or 2 am my windowless studio stays the same. I am sure you can imagine how weird that can make you feel! However this was not helped by the way I spent my weekend. I spent my whole Saturday at the Barbican Theatre, watching a nine hour play by Robert Lepage called Lypsinch. Yup you read correctly 9 hours! Thing is, it was brilliant. It went by so quickly. Kind of felt like I could sit back for a day and watch other people’s lives unfold themselves over two generations. I left the theatre with that satisfied smirk you get on your face when you manage to read a long book in one sitting!

Robert Lepage is a Canadian director/writer/actor from Montreal. His shows may seem abstract and a bit unapproachable at first, but that’s not the case. They are often long and in more than one language. However this is still some of the most unpretentious theatre you could go to. If you ever get a chance to see something he’s done, give it a go!

Lepage recently collaborated with Cirque Du Solei on Ka (above) as well as doing a 3 million euro installation on an enormous silo in Montreal to celebrate Quebec’s 400th anniversary. I was so tempted to take a trip out to see it as all the footage I’ve found on youtube is terrible. But I thought it wiser to get on with my work and not waste money on such a decadent “research trip”! Either way for years now, the man has become a total hero of mine… yes another one! :)

When in writing mode, I find myself looking constantly for things to inspire me and fill with head with new ideas and you never really know where that will come from. For example, writing Big Girls after watching a late night TV show. All I ever look for is a phrase or sentence that I can build something around.

Speaking of things I liked, I saw Somers Town last week and I loved it. Thomas Turgoose (the actor from This is England) plays a kid who runs away from his home in Nottingham to escape his family. He bumps into and makes friends with a Polish boy and this close friendship blossoms. It focuses on how these boys emotionally survive in London in the absence of their parents. Thomas Turgoose must be one of the coolest actors in England.

I’ve been plotting a really sweet collaboration with the illustrator Sophie Blackall, which I will explain later on in the week. Going to see Madonna tonight. Can’t wait.

M xxxx

Rooms without Windows — I totally understand that. Many’s the day I’ve sat at my computer so engrossed in what I was writing that I might as well have been in a windowless room — the total immersion in work can be very isolating. The last thing you should do after that is sit in a dark theater for 9 hours! But it sounds like a cool experience. Very interesting that you seem to be looking at Cirque du Soleil a lot for inspiration lately — you’ll just have to get to Disney World in Florida to see their show La Nouba!

Have a fantastic time seeing Madonna tonight — would you believe that the first time I saw her was 1984ish? Who would have believed she’d still be going so strong 25 years later?

Thanks as always for the blog!

    Hey Mika,

The absence of light in your studio makes me imagine how solar and brilliant your recordings will certainly be, for the balance !

I would love to sit 9 hours in front of a great play or movie or show (one of yours maybe …?). But imagine if it were not so good …You were lucky to enjoy it, otherwise, what a long time wasted …

Thanks for your blog, it refreshes my day, here very hot (Toulouse, South of France) !!!

bye, and hope to hear / read / see you again as soon as p. !!!

Ah you poor thing… I wold feel as if I was a cage there!
    Those are really interesting.
I saw Cirque du Soleil two months ago, and it was absolutely amazing. The characters, the voices, the songs, plus the organization of the whole thing… One thing you can’t pretend you dislike.
Lepage seems really good! I’m going to check on it! =)
    Going to see Madonna? wow.

I a little, that have understood))). It is a pity, these your words are difficult for my understanding ((. But I have understood, that you were at theatre). I too today shall go to theatre! On new performance, prepremier (this informal representation, before opening of a new season).

Aaaww! This is so weird. Every time I check this blog expecting a new update, I get disappointed, and now I was just browsing this I found it! Yeah!

So Madonna?? :) Wow I wonder how one of her super-gigs must be. Flamboyant, at least. Hope you enjoy it.

About the lack-of-light-issue… I don’t know how you can stand something like that. I don’t know if it’s because I’m Mediterranean or what, but I couldn’t live without sunlight, it must feel depressing! Hope you finish your studio hours and you can get long sunbaths… which is healthier than everything else.

All the art stuff you talked about I liked it, despite of the fact I didn’t even hear of it before. But I don’t know if it’s you or if it’s really artists you like and share with us, but I like them all!! How can this be?? All those shows, galleries, artists etc are other reason for me to want to live in London! It’s my biggest dream.

9 hours!! Well, I’ve never been so long watching a show, but I stand up for 12 hours, I don’t know which one is worse (or better :S)

Thanks a lot for the blog. Hope you never stop this, your music and so… it would be one of the saddests days :D

Rushing to put “SOMERS TOWN” on my
NETFLIX list. This is what they say about the film:
After leaving his Nottingham hometown for the big city of London, brash young Tomo (Thomas Turgoose) befriends introverted Polish immigrant Marek (Piotr Jagiello). The mismatched teens bond as they each develop a crush on Maria (Elisa Lasowski), a French waitress. Director Shane Meadows’s black-and-white coming-of-age film follows the teens as they experience their first summer in London. Ireneusz Czop co-stars as Marek’s hard-drinking father.
    THANX for the hot tip!

Not that you lack any creativity… but if you are looking for some inspiration,

    Here’s a something interesting…

There is an amazing event taking place end of November in London…

Around 50 people from all around the world have decided to meet November 29th/30th with one thing in common, their admiration to an artist – in the process of meeting each other online, they have discovered that although it was their common love for the artist that brought them together, their bond have grown and now they are looking forward meeting each other and knowing more about each other on a personal level, bearing in mind that each one of them comes from a different generation, culture, country, and background.

In the strangest ways, these people have connected on a human level, sharing each other’s experiences, sorrows and happy moments.

And although their bond started as a common admiration to a pop star, it grew into something beyond that.

By the way, am talking about the next MFC meeting in London – limited invitation to members only.

PS: Madonna’s concert is amazing, my friends just came back from Germany and showed me the footage… she is amazing… you will have a blast (I am envious)

Good to hear from you again.I cant really say much this time as Ive never been to theatre and Im not familiar with anyone you mentioned. However Ive seen reviews on tv about Somer town and Id like to see it.
Hahaha if you need some new ideas for writing you should check out some of the crazy stories on the Mikasounds forum. One recent fantasy is ‘Future Posts’ A grey haired Mika and old wrinkled Mikasounds gang :)

Au contraire Mika, I think a trip to Canada is vital for the quality of your album and you should get over here immediately.

If I can afford a trip to London you can afford a trip to Canada so drop the “waste of money” talk. It’s not as if you need Louboutin to hand deliver you some bespoke shoes to a Lepage installation in Quebec. Just stay at the Comfort Inn and wear cheap trainers like the rest of us plebs!

I can’t believe you spent 9 hours at the Barbican Theatre. I endured 3 interminable hours there watching a 19th century Russian setting of The Winter’s Tale and that was more than enough.

    Have fun at Madonna!

Don’t hold your breath, but supposedly Lepage’s The Image Mill could came back for an encore next summer, because even after they extended it, there’s still a huge demand. Rumor though…so…hopefully? A friend of mine went 3 times!…Although any old excuse to go to Quebec is a good one…xr

Ohh, and you may like this: a classic, quintessentially Québécois/Canadian children’s story (Le chandail):

Wow Mika, 9 hours of sitting still….i could never do it :P Although from the pictures it does look like it was so amazing. I am deifnitely jealous! Living in a smallish town absolutely sucks :P

I too know how you feel about not getting enough daylight…..i work indoors 12 hrs a day, and i dont know if its raining or sunny outside…..maybe you should ask for a studio with a HUGE window! That would be divine! A window where you could watch people as they walk by,watching the way they interact…..never know, it could give you some great song and lyric ideas.

Anyways, hope you have something fun planned for the weekend.

    Cheers, Laurah :) (Australia)

Argghhhh, being in a windowless room all day is not good! I have spent a day in a Photographer’s Darkroom and when I finally emerged I felt totally disorientated and the daylight was blinding eek! You need to get out now and again to soak up some natural light - we don’t want you getting ‘SAD’ disorder - or your new album could sound very ‘dark’ indeed ;) Oh nooo, it’s happening already - you have been looking into the dark side - haven’t you?!! Ha ha…

LOVE Cirque de Soleil shows - agree with Deb - you must go to Florida and see La Nouba (oh and also you can then capture some of that sunshine you’ve been missing out of whilst cooped up in the studio!), but better than that you should REALLY go to Vegas and see ZUMANITY (the saucier side of Cirque du Soleil) - you’d love it :D

And are you trying to tell us not to waste money on decadent “research trips”!? Easy, just make sure to do the next couple of gigs somewhere near my hometown.

Have fun with Madonna, she’s not really my cup of tea but it’s okay if she’s your icon. As long as you don’t try to be like her. :P

Oh my God!! 9 hours!!! You gonna see Madonna?? I like her. She will come to Portugal on next week, but i will not go to see her. :( Say her that i send a kiss for her. ihihihi :) lol

  57. Luzaka :

    Date: September 11, 2008 @ 1:56 pm

How could you sit 9 hours watching a play??! I can’t imagine it! But apparently you enjoyed it :P

And I know what you mean about the windowless room..it is horrible! But maybe this will be in our own favor as you would want to hurry up & finish the recording quickly and consequently we’ll get to have the NEW CD lol!

Personally I’m not really a fan of Madonna..

So anyhow I’m happy to finally get to hear from you. Loved it!

    Take Care;)

    Couscous Mika!

    Am I first?

OK so I know I’m not.

9 hours? I hope the seats were comfortable and you could get up and make a cup of tea when you liked?

About the Somerstown film, call me a xenophobe if you like but I prefer British films, or European to American films - American ones often seem to sacrifice storlyine and atmosphere for action and gloss.

    Bisto!

Hi thanks for the really long blog!
Sounds that you have been very busy, 9 hours for a play that is long!!

Somers Town seems like a good film will have to take a look.

    Enjoy Madonna

    Hello Mika!

wow…seems pretty funny how I’ve been checking out some new pics of you with Katy (who’s born on the same day with me by the way :D )today…and now I come here and find a brand new post of yours…truly fab.

So…you’ve been in the studio all this time…poor you!

    :(

I like the movie…seems cool…very much like what nowadays’ directors do…looks nice…and I think I’ll see it too in order to make some notes on how a good movie is done…(i want to become a director one but shhhhhhhhhhhh) thanks for giving good tips bout movies, Meeks! :D

So you’re going to see Madonna tonight? Great! (I’m going to see “Scent of a woman”…one of the most brilliant movies ever) I have seen Kylie in concert this spring and I have been amazed…in total awe!!!! ;) :D

Have fun, then!!! and tell us how you liked it afterwards ok?

sophie blackall is helping your sister or something?…just looking forward to hear bout this!

great hearing from you, wonderful surprise (and I want to hear somemore about the DVD!!!!!!!) and that’s it for now…from me!
I’m going to watch my cheap soap opera fav programme “young and the restless”…

    Ciao, Mika!!!

    a bientot!

P.S. you’d better shave that beard off, doesn’t look that good!…you look manly enough without it and you know it!

So happy to have news about you!

you know, it’s quite difficult to work with this fuck**** weather!!! i’m in France but in the North (West) and it’s raining all the day at the moment so I feel so depressed! i’m asking myself why i don’t live in the south??? lol

but i’m sure we will have some sun again!!!
    no??? :-(

so enjoy madonna’s show, i think it would be great and spectacular!

i could spent 9 hours watching madonna but in a theatre, i don’t think so!
but i can make effort if you invite me! What? It never hurts to ask! lol

  62. Mary :

    Date: September 11, 2008 @ 2:06 pm

Oh…the waiting…the torture…lol Thanks for coming back! =P And with a very nice blog, I must say!

First of all, I kinda “hate” you right now, cause I didn’t manage to get tickets to see Madonna. Not that she’s one of my fave artists, but her show must be amazing! I’d love to see it…Can we wait for a report on the gig? ;) Have lots of fun (for me too)! lol

As for the Robert Lepage’s play…well…9 hours is a bit too long for what I’m used to! lol But if you leave the room with that nice feeling you described, I guess it’s worthy. I’ve never heard of him, I’ll try to stay tuned and see if I can find some more of his work. Maybe a bit difficult here in Portugal, but… Well, we’ll see. ;)
Anyway, it’s another guy for the “Cool-artists-databese” you’re building here! eheh

Loved the trailer of Somers Town. Those stories of friendship and helping eachother always make my heart melt…

Finally…the thing you said about the lack of sunlight. Gosh, I’d go completely crazy after a couple of days. I need to see some light, even if I don’t go out. Specially when I’m working or studying…

Anyway, can’t wait for some news on your work. Everyday I get more and more curious! =)

Have fun tonight, and say “Hi” to Madonna for me! lol
    Take care!

Studio life sounds unimproved - artificial air and light - like constant long-hauling:( Hopefully what emerges will be anything but artificial as before & it sounds like you have your eyes, ears and mind well open to inspiration. Cannot wait for the results:)

9 Hours of theatre life sounds the ideal antidote to studio world!

Hope you enjoy Madonna – have declined offer of £90 ticket from friend. However, would def pay that to see you again. Hammersmith was brilliant – well worth waiting a year for!

    Bonjour Mika,

Well someone’s had a busy and interesting week! (not me:() It was so nice to hear from you after the recent break in blogs.

Maybe I’m strange, but I don’t mind windowless rooms, if I’m trying to work. Less distraction that way. It’s a bit different if you’re just passing time in one, then it would send me stir crazy.

I’m presuming that all of your recent adventures in cinema and theatre etc are for research?? Lets hope they provide some good inspiration, as I’m really looking forward to what you’ve been working on.

Also looking forward to hearing about your collaboration with Sophie Blackall. I remember you mentioning in a blog months ago that you were going to one of her exhibits (I think??). This should be quite interesting.

Take care and hope you enjoy/are enjoying/have enjoyed Madonna’s gig.

  84. Dragana :

    Date: September 11, 2008 @ 3:39 pm

    Oh my!

An Official MIKA blog! I was starting to think that those were becoming extinct!

‘Nuff with the jokes, I know that you’ve been busy in the (windowless) studio for, let’s be honest, our benefit, SO THANK YOU FOR YOUR DEDICATION!

Oh great God, waiting for the new CD, as well as the Parc des Princes DVD, is SO DIFFICULT! How will we ever make it!

Funny you should mention Robert Lepage. He’s really appreciated here in Montreal, well in all of Quebec really. Unfortunately, I’m not as familiar with his work as you are and I live in his neck of the woods! That’s just bad!

Yeah, it’s unfortunate that you decided “to get on with my work and not waste money on such a decadent “research trip”!”, for you could have stayed with me ; ) and thus wasted practically no money on the said “research trip”!

Consider this an open-ended invitation, so whenever you want to come by, just give me a shout!

Regarding Lepage’s Silo installation however, I was under the impression that it was in Quebec City and not in Montreal, I should look into that. The photographs you posted of it look absolutely amazing, I want to go see it now!

Have been listening to “Fight Test” and “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1” from a certain American band you seem to like ; ) ! Thanks for introducing me to The Flaming Lips, they are really unique and very playful!

Oh, by the way, have you downloaded their Screensaver yet? If not, RUN to do so, it’s REALLY COOL, and there’s something totally unexpected and special at the bottom right hand corner of their Screensaver (I don’t want to ruin it for you if you haven’t seen it yet), so for that alone, it’s completely worth downloading.

Oh, and the colours on their Screensaver are SO PRETTY too! Well in fact, all the colours on their website are really very pretty!

Speaking of which, will you be creating some OFFICIAL MIKA SCREENSAVERS for the new website? That would be TOPS! I can just imagine it now, Lollipop Girl bouncing around in the Emerald Forest, running away from Chu Chu, just like that famous DaWack painting, you know, the one that’s in the LiCM booklet. DO IT! DO IT!

Anyway, have a FABULOUS time at Madonna’s concert tonight and THANKS FOR THIS LOVELY UPDATE!

    Love,

    Dragana

Working with out windows - get a “daylight” lamp - it simulates daylight - and also combats Season Affected Disorder - not that I am suggesting you suffer from that - but it really does give a feel good factor to life!!
9 hours is a long time to sit - but if its when you are watching something you are enjoying then the time would just fly!!
    Enjoy Madonna’s show tonight!!!

Windowless rooms can be so depressing. I worked at an office that didnt have a window for a few months and not being able to see the sunlight seemed so awful.

A play that lasts for nine hours and yet goes by quickly must be amazing. Really it must be brilliant to keep the audience interested for 9 hours!

I’m definitely gonna watch Somers Town. Judging by its trailer it seems like a very interesting film. I’ve watched the other film you recommended(Valentin) a few days ago and LOVED it!

Cant wait to learn more about your collaboration with Sophie Blackwall!

PS: Have fun at Madonna’s concert

Then it isn’t wasted money ;D
and we’d love to have you here!
But don’t go eat at Basha, go to Sirène de la Mer.

9 hours? wow you are one patient man… did you snooze at all?

looking forward to your next album Monsieur! and of course, your next tour.

    Mika,
Whats really remarkable is that through your journey to be inspired, you inspire others, things that people never would have heard, never would have seen, they now have the opportunity to expand their minds.
I am a mom of 4 (young mom, 35). Who would have thought that I’d be anxiously awaiting to hear what you have to say next! Thankx for sharing all that you do, it makes this stay at home mom feel somehow…connected.

    Hey Mika,

Great to hear from you again.

A 9 hour play is crazy, but as least you enjoyed it. Imagine if you’d hated it and could never get those 9 hours of your life back again?!

Have fun at Madonna. I love all her old stuff, but think all the new stuff is a bit trite, but that said I’m sure she’d put on a great show.

I’m waiting patiently for my purchases from the Mika Store. How fab it will be to bring my lunch to work in my Mika tote bag! It will make me happy for a small part of the working day at least.

I’m not exactly a fan of Madonna, but whatever floats your boat…

Maybe you have much more patience than me, I couldn’t sit there and watch a play for 9 hours! I’d lose concentration after about 3 I’d say…

Any news on when the album will be out? Or maybe a new tour?

    Hi Mika,

The concept of writing songs has always fascinated me. It has always struck me that it is probably just a phrase or some other small thing that just kicks an idea off. I just find lyrics so totally enthralling.

I couldn’t possible imagine sitting still for nine hours……….tbh I can’t really manage an ordinary length film, but it must be amazing to be so engrossed in something that nine hours passes without you really noticing.

    Hope you enjoy Madonna.

Thanks so much for the lovely long blog :)

    Hi Mika, welcome back!

    People tend to be depressed
when they don’t see sunlight, so I
    think you should not
    spend so much time indoors.
    It’s a great thing you’re going
    out and getting distraction from
what you’re doing so your mind
doesn’t get blocked and when you return to the studio you feel a lot
better and focused on your music.

Is the song Rain gonna be on the next album? I really love this song.
Have you ever considered writing and including a song in spanish?
    (It’ll surely become a hit).
It would be great! you have a nice accent.

I think a 9 hour play is too long
but I’m glad you liked it.

    Take care,

I have to be honest: I woudln’t be able to join when you go to that kind of events. I hardly can stay an hour at the cinema without going to the bathroom, haha

…imagine if I have to stay 9! Can’t be quiet for a long time :p

I liked the trailer. Seems to be a good film, specially the polish boy :D that character made me smile

I’m more into Twilight now, haha (and waiting for the movie, that will be here on Christmas!). I dunno if you like that kind of stories, but I find it really great

“All I ever look for is a phrase or sentence that I can build something around.” Do you ever read through a CD’s track listing and try to work out how the songs would go, without hearing them first?

Hmm, any chance of doing a “research trip” to Oz.. You know, to research didgeridoos or smth.. :P

Good to hear your working with an Australian. I hope Sophie gives you cheek. Lots of it.

Ok, Well, have a great time at Madoooooona’s concert tonight. Don’t forget to get your cone bra autographed.

    Well hello!

I have this most hilarious screensaver of you handing out piggy back rides. That looked like a lot of fun and it was good to see you so happy and at ease. Although, now I keep hearing *save a horse, ride a cowboy* in my head.

9 hours? for real? dammnnn. Do they serve lunch and dinner? wow

Have fun at Madonna’s concert. Would love to see that backstage photo. Are you going to give Madge a ride? Now that would make headlines LOLOLOL

    Love ya!!!!!! smooo

    Hi Mika ! :)

well,i was there too, on saturday, unfortunately i was sitting in the middle of the corbeille (= yeah right next to you)
the man from the library was right about you and your smell “fish and mayo” and i would add “with a slight touch of marmite”
result:i spent the beginning of the play with my scarf on my nose, thanks God you left after 15 minutes to come back 8 hours later…to eat some caramel pocorn very noisily, play with your boogers and drop that diet coke you were trying to hide in your bag result: you screwed up my paper shoes…
what else can i say? maybe that im glad there is not a chance that i might still be stuck with you tonight at the gig of the best musician ever since im gonna see
iggy (check iggy pop - check the stooges - check rock and roll)

oh and…survive in London in the absence of their parents, you mean like the time your parents went on holidays for a week in Brighton and you had to survive in the cruel jungle of your victorian house with you sisters?

no, seriously i cannot wait to discover your new lyrics
    xxx

did you see that? they make art with trash, its for nothing, from nothing and it makes something beautiful at the end.

At last - the blog after so many time,LOL!

I’ve heard for Lypsinch but I never watched it. But I know that here in Serbia is one international theater festival called Bitef, which has a long tradition here…maybe they’re gonna play Lypsinch one time :) i certainly hope so.

I know the feel in the windowless room. We have one in our school. Kinda scary, really.

Madonna tonight? Hmmm, have a great time! I’m sure you will…well,it’s MADONNA after all, isn’t it? ;)
She’s coming to Montenegro (it’s veeeery near Serbia xD) for about two weeks, but I’m not going to watch it.
Maybe because I’m not such a huge Madonna fan.

    Once again,have a wonderful week! ;)

    Kisses and hugs

ok encore de supers activités culturelles, quelle chance tu as!

    gros bisous

iIt seems interesting, the play… :)

Oh! I wish I could see Madonna too.. She’s just amazing, Isn’t she? But the only 5 concerts she will play here in Brazil are absurdly expensive… And the last time she came was in 1993!

Mika, don’t make us wait too much for you here! And don’t make it very expensive!

Sorry for my bad english, again…

i can imagine how that feels , you totally loose the time. but maybe it’s better to work like this so time won’t interfear your great work.

sometimes i work the whole night and thats really a strange feeling. i don’t sleep at all than , i start designing on my kitchen table in the morning and the next morning i’m still at the same place and see my kids come out of bed.

it’s not good for your body to do too often so take some rest .

btw i don’t think i could sit down and watch something for 9 hours , i mean i can’t even watch a movie until the end because i always fall asleep on the couch.

what do you do in the meantime , do you eat or drink?

  131. Noaa :

    Date: September 11, 2008 @ 7:24 pm

Tu as du mérite!

I understand what you mean about staying in the same place for so many hours, you actually loose count of time and date..
when I have been working VERY intensively, like 22 hrs a day (NOT kidding..), I used to go out of work, after the final rush, wondering if it was day or night and what day it was.. alienating.. :(

9 hrs play.. wow, I am impressed.. you must have a bad back for sitting so long.. LOL

enjoy madonna, though I never ever got the hang of her, sorry.. ;)
