INTRODUCING THE BLACKALL PROJECT
October 2, 2008 9:49 pm Games, artWhooooaaaaaaAAAAH!
I am totally excited about this. About six months ago when I was on a research trip in New York, I blogged about the illustrator Sophie Blackall. What I didn’t say was that when I saw her drawings in real life, I fell completely in love with them and left new york with quite a sizeable collection. I absolutely love what she does. Her line is so sophisticated and feminine. Elegant and yet still very whimsical. Check out some of the images below, a couple of which are actually on the walls of my home!
Sophie is from Australia and lives in Brooklyn. For a time back in Oz she even worked in a robot factory. She then won a green card in a national lottery back home. She now illustrates children’s books as well as draw for newspapers and magazines.
I have now moved from my studio in London to start working with other musicians in LA. I have thinking up a plan for an art project to do while in the studio and thought of this:
I remembered when I was younger, I was obsessed with playing a drawing game, where you would start a drawing, fold it over so no one could see what you drew, then hand it to someone else who would continue it and they hand it back and so one and so forth until you could unfold the paper and reveal the often strange but amazing result. It dawned on me that this would be a perfect game to play whilst recording. However this time do it with an amazing illustrator and without folding the paper.
SO, over the next few weeks Sophie and I will be collaborating on a drawing without communicating apart from on the piece of drawing paper which will be sent back and forth, from LA to NYC. The idea is for me start something, send it to her, she adds to it, sends it back and we continue back and forth until we think its done. We will then be making a limited edition object with the final drawing, which we will run a competition on the blog for people to win. Brrrr that was complicated to explain!
I have no idea what it will look like or what the end object we chose to make will be! Thats what’s fun about this process.
We will be starting this week. In the meantime check out Sophie’s website.

With love, from sunny LA,

Great this idea of both of you making a drawing this way, I made this with a friend of mine few years ago, but it was not the same circonstances and not the same aim… Have fun, it’s a brillant idea the result will be awesome
Good luck for the end of the recording, the mastering and stuff…

Hello Mika!
It sounds great that you are now in LA - so your album becomes always more real! You have sun there?? VERY FINE!!!! Get out of your dark studio in London
Really, we all here take very care of your health, you know?!
Your “drawing-project” seems an interesting plan - but one thing I don’t like it, sorry for my open word - but I hate competitions where only ONE can win something. Isn’t it better to send us all, who want it, a short mail with your “piece of art”
- so everybody of your hard-die-fans would be very, very happy about it…
but however, I like your neverending good ideas and in thoughts I stay with you
Have a good night/day and take care of you
yours ♥♥ Ulrike of Vienna

I remember looking her up when you mentioned her a while ago, she does really great work, i bet you very excited to work with her on your project!
I remember playing that game when i was younger as well- very fun! I guess you’re being all hard-core and taking it up a notch with the professional-ness!
I hope to see the final product soon!

Dear Mika,
Thank you for presenting Sophie’s magnificent art to me!
For me, these drawings are a kind of surrealistic flashback images from my childood memories…
They’re marvelous and hypnotic at the same time because they always seem to draw back my attention to something I did not catch at first sight… something subliminar in the drawing that touches the “back” of my mind.
It’s fascinating, really! Thanks, M!
Kate :

Those drawings look really familiar. They’re brilliant. I feel like I’ve heard of her. I like to shop on a few Brooklyn based websites, so maybe that’s where.
…But anyway, this is so exciting! You must be very excited to get that package in the mail every week. Cannot wait to see what comes of it!

Her drawings are so pretty and look so “fragile”
Love it! =)
And that idea sounds amazing!
Have fun in sunny LA!
It’s good to know you’re having a good time, and you have picked some pretty good illustrator, I don’t really know how can you find about these things, they are just fascinating.
Thanks for sharing

Hi Mika. I love Sophie’s drawings. Actually, the one lying on the bed reminds me FRIDA KAHLO’S famous painting in which she’s lying on the bed with balloons which represent her dreams. concerning the first pic, if you look carefully, the teapot has the same patwork style that the lovely story for children called “ELMER” (also name of a city in the South of England, in which I recently lived for some time):

Those are great drawings,I really like them. I’ve seen her illustrations in some children books and magazines here in Serbia, followed with little text, but I don’t think she wrote them herself.
They seem very romantic and as you said sophisticated, very imaginative and creative,I like them so much! Especially the third one,it’s very cute.
Great to hear you’re in LA and that you’re collaborating with some fantastic artists
Awh and yeah, thanks for this blog,I enjoyed it!

Wow, these illustrations are utterly charming! I really like them. Will check out the website later.
The game you mention is very familiar to me as I used to play it too as a child, but haven’t played it for donkeys years!!
When we played we usually started a person (eg with a head, then passed it on for someone to do the upper torso with clothes, lower torso with clothes, then arms, legs, etc). The final completed person would often look like something out of Frankenstein, made out of odd/spare body parts!!
Sometimes it would be an animal, which would end up looking like some sort of mythical beast! I recall how much fun it was seeing the final outcome; often funny and/or just plain bizarre! Gosh, those were happy days!!
A lovely idea to make something which will be used as a prize here on the Blog!! Oooh, can’t wait to hear what it will be, or to try to win it!!
I am also excited to hear that you have moved onto a new ‘phase’ with work. Hope you are enjoying working with the musicians and being in sunny LA!!
Adios amigo,
With love from not-so-sunny Blighty,

Holy shmeck!!
You’re really excited about all this, aren’t you? And the thing is…you pass all that excitement to us! =P
I use to play that game you said, but with text. We’d write a sentence, then fold the paper and leave just one word, so the next person would continue it, and so on. The final result would be the most random story that you could imagine! I totally love that game! LOL
No need to say, I absolutely loved your “project” with Sophie. I know I probably won’t win the final competition (god, that would be like the best thing ever!), but anyway, the idea is just brilliant!
*imagines a project like that in MFC…hummm…niiice!*
About Sophie’s work, well…I love it! Each day I admire more people who can show us something through a drawing, because sometimes it’s so much better than words… =)

And for a definition of what is the Exquisite corpse http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exquisite_corpse

hey Mika,
what a great idea! :). Tell you why I’m so looking forward to it:
A few weeks ago a reread one of my favorite children’s books. I read it for the first time when I was seven, and fell in love with it (it’s still one of the books that I never lend away cause I feel uneasy when its not anywhere near - call me a fool
).
It’s name is ‘Das Geheimnis der orangenfarbenen Katze’ (’the secret of the orange-colored cat’) and tells the story of a boy who’s mother is a painter and who likes to look at his mom’s pictures and suddenly one day they all come to life and all pictures take part in a exciting story about a little girl that has never laughed in it’s life, and a orange-colored cat of course
thing is: The book has 10 chapters, and each is written by another author from all over Europe and even from Japan and Russia. The first author wrote the first chapter, and then send it to the next one who wrote the second chapter and so on. The story is still very ‘whole’, and I love the result.
so, once again: I’m absolutely looking forward to the result of your ‘co-painting’
have fun!
Doro xx

WOWWW :O
Muahhhh!
1st of all, this blog is fantastic!
I agree with what you said about it looking feminine, and at the same time some of the drawings seem twisted. I love it. But the drawing style seems very light and fluffy, if you get what I mean..
Secondly, that game sounds awesome. I used to be obsessed with one where you throw a string or necklace on the ground and think of what it looks like, and everyone has a different interpretation on it.
Thirdly, I love your taste in art and music. It seems that we have pretty similar taste, even though we don’t know eachother *blush*
And FOURTHly, that is probably the most wondrous, genius idea I have heard for a bloggy gift. Whoever wins that thing… JSKDJAOI! Lucky person! Lucky!
AND fifthly, you’re in LA! Whoo! We’re in the same country! State! Vicinity! Air! Hemisphere! Ground! Section of earth!
I hope you have fun! It’s been super hot lately. And humid. Apparently its supposed to rain on Saturday though!
I hope you have a fantastic time in CA (You should visit Orange County. And while your at it, go to *writes address*)
Anyways, take care, thank you for the blog, and chao!

Lovely and charming… I`ve heard already about this experiment. They told me about it in the university. I had a teacher who said that you don`t know how a picture will be `till you`ve done it. This case is the same but very improved, isn`t it?
I`m infinitely jealous of the interesting things you do…

Okay, firstly, my bugbear about what is wrong with recording here?
We have many brilliant studios here(blatant plug for Real World studios, owned by Peter Gabriel!), why do you need to go to LA?
Anyway, this project with Sophie sounds fantastic, I have heard of the drawing game, and can imagine how great the results can be.
Nice thing to make a competition for the end result, an original piece of art is always nice to have.
Look forward to seeing the end result, you will post a picture of it I hope.
Well one good thing, at least you are starting to record now, is Mo with you, or have you left him here?
And it’s nice that you are in the nice sunshine, while some of us are freezing our backsides off waiting for a breakdown truck to turn up! LOL!
daisylou :

Heya!
I mentioned Sophie Blackhall to you ages ago …remember…Great minds!I adore her illustrations…but said all this before! lol
A competition!….. is it gonna be worth entering…I mean winning a PRIZE this time?….do I need to say anymore? lol :o/
Something very bizarre is I used to teach at a primary school while at college and I taught my children to play that game…they were young so you can imagine the pictures!
Do you remember those books where they are split into sections horizontally. They all start off as people or animals then depending on how many sections you flip you could end up with something peculiar…a monkey body with a policeman’s hat and fireman boots with a Princess tiara! I loved playing with those books. That is what the game reminds me of.
How are you gonna pass the drawing without seeing it in it’s entirety..you are just suppose to leave a little bit seen, so you can see where to continue the drawing or are you not literally playing the game? It is late I need sleep! nothing makes sense I apologise! 1.45am here I need a “white coffee” to help me rest.
Take Care
daisy!
ps. What happened to the LICM media? you decided on recording the album afterall then.
pps. Will you bring me a Maltipoo back please..a white one preferably a little boy if possible. Thanks ;D

Hi Mika!
It’s very interesting when you tell us about the things that are important for you, it’s a fascinating way to know you better.
I visited Sophie’s website and there are two pictures that I love, Parting Words and Infertility.
The first one is like when you need a hug and nothing else to feel you complete and save.
And the second picture, when you have an important friendship and you want to keep it or a beautiful relationship that is growning.
Well, hope to see you again!
Check this webiste, it’s about one of the most important chilean poets. His name is Nicanor Parra, he is Violeta Parra’s brother, maybe you know her, she has a beautiful song which is called “Gracias a la Vida” or “Thanks to life”.
Bye!

Sinisterly sweet drawings and great concept. I used to do that covertly in fifth grade–until one day we were found out by the teacher. Alas!

And I love this game too! I used to play it with my brother quite often. We also played the one with sentences. You start a sentence, fold the paper, give it to your neighbour, who continues the sentence and so forth. The sentences end up being REALLY funny ^^

I simply adore your idea.
This shows how artistic your spirit is.
You’re not the kind of guy who simply dreams without making any effort to make his dream come true.
I don’t know why, but I have always thought that you were also a drawer : am I wrong ?
I used to draw all the time, when I was younger. This is like inventing worlds. Now I’m writing, and the purpose is quite close actually.
I also admire a lot Sophie’s artwork, and Sophie herself (throuh her blog she seems to be a fabulous person).
Congratulations to both of you.
Let us know how your project goes !
Lots of love,

This is a great idea and i’m sure something beautifully strange, or strangely beautiful, will result of it !

Enormes bisous!!

Whoa, three new bolgs, lucky me! ^_^
Hello Mika! Good to see that you are blogging more frequently again.
I love the way you described your impression of Sophie Blackall’s art. “I absolutely love what she does. Her line is so sophisticated and feminine. Elegant and yet still very whimsical.” Its so true. A perfect description! Those pictures are beautiful. You must have quite an amazing looking wall. I’m curious to see how you arranged them in your home. Very nice!
I think your idea is great! I’m very curious to see how this will turn out. I’ve got to find a way to keep updated in all that I’m going offline. It’s a killer when you are always near a computer but can’t use it due to focusing on other more important aspects of your life. Giving up leisure is a bit of a pain but much need at times.
Anyways, its good to hear from you!

I just had an idea. You know how you were pondering about tattoo art. Well, i think you should get someone to give you a tattoo of one of Sophie&
