ROOMS WITHOUT WINDOWS

Posted on September 11th, 2008 by Mika
It doesn't feel like a Wednesday night. As I sit here in the studio in London, I am trying to figure out where the past few days have gone. The biggest problem is the lack of daylight.  Whether its 10 am or 2 am my windowless studio stays the same. I am sure you can imagine how weird that can make you feel! However this was not helped by the way I spent my weekend. I spent my whole Saturday at the Barbican Theatre, watching a nine hour play by Robert Lepage called Lypsinch. Yup you read correctly 9 hours! Thing is, it was brilliant. It went by so quickly. Kind of felt like I could sit back for a day and watch other people's lives unfold themselves over two generations. I left the theatre with that satisfied smirk you get on your face when you manage to read a long book in one sitting! Robert Lepage is a Canadian director/writer/actor from Montreal. His shows may seem abstract and a bit unapproachable at first, but that's not the case. They are often long and in more than one language. However this is still some of the most unpretentious theatre you could go to. If you ever get a chance to see something he's done, give it a go! Lepage recently collaborated with Cirque Du Solei on Ka (above) as well as doing a 3 million euro installation on an enormous silo in Montreal to celebrate Quebec's 400th anniversary. I was so tempted to take a trip out to see it as all the footage I've found on youtube is terrible. But I thought it wiser to get on with my work and not waste money on such a decadent "research trip"! Either way for years now, the man has become a total hero of mine... yes another one! :)       When in writing mode, I find myself looking constantly for things to inspire me and fill with head with new ideas and you never really know where that will come from. For example, writing Big Girls after watching a late night TV show. All I ever look for is a phrase or sentence that I can build something around.     Speaking of things I liked, I saw Somers Town last week and I loved it. Thomas Turgoose (the actor from This is England) plays a kid who runs away from his home in Nottingham to escape his family. He bumps into and makes friends with a Polish boy and this close friendship blossoms. It focuses on how these boys emotionally survive in London in the absence of their parents. Thomas Turgoose must be one of the coolest actors in England.      I've been plotting a really sweet collaboration with the illustrator Sophie Blackall, which I will explain later on in the week. Going to see Madonna tonight. Can't wait. M xxxx

Okay, I know I’m a bit too late to comment on this, but I saw Somers Town yestarday (yes, independent movies take ages to arrive in Spain) and have to say I am touched. I loved the way it depicts the feelings of these two loners in a cold hearted London, and the real meaning of friendship and love. I really liked the use of the B/W and colour bits and its meaning. And the music is just brilliant! It’s the kind of film that makes you think, and realise the world could be a better place if we all saw our neighbours with a different pair of eyes.

Thank you for your recommendation, maybe I would have not watched this marvellous fairy tale if it wasn’t for you.

¡Besos!

Asun.

Oh Mika, staying in widowless room is kinda scary for me, actually I’m a bit claustrophobic.

And thanks for the info about Lypsinch and Cirque de Soleil, I’d like to see them one day.It looks like Wagnerian opera in postmodern way smile

Much love,

Windowless cubicles… well, I can’t say I work in a cubicle, because the labs in my college are actually quite big. But they are mostly windowless. And it seems that the older you get, the less windows there are. Allow me to explain: in the first year in college, the labs we worked on had a few windows; the second year, we were in different labs, and they had just a couple of windows; the last year, they have no windows and are somewhat underground… Oh, well, it seems that when I start taking my masters or really start working in research, I’ll be alone inside a bunker or something like that… =P

But it’s not that bad. Fortunately, I don’t spend the whole day inside, though almost… But there’s one thing that keeps me going: the immense joy I get from doing what I do. That’s what makes me forget about the fact that there are no windows around wink

Oh, and thanks for that trailler! I’ll be going to the Blockbuster this weekend to see if they already have it for renting…

XO,
IA

My fiancee used to go to art college with Shane Meadows. We both love all his films. Especially Dead Man’s Shoes. That’s such a dark film (as is the way with Meadows’ films) but well worth a watch. And i agree, Thomas Turgoose is an amazing actor. Loved him in This is England so i’m expecting big things from him.

I just noticed that I tend to abuse of the word “brilliant”...

Oh well… blame english-not-being-my-first-language for the lack of vocabulary…

Yesterday I saw an add for a Peter Gabriel concert that was gonna air on Musimax… and the “mise en scène” was done by Robert Lepage.  It seemed BRILLIANT !!!  I forgot when it’s gonna air but I’ll surely check it out.  Maybe you should give him a call for your next tour… *wink wink, nudge nudge*

Oh and if you have the chance, you HAVE to see “Le projet Andersen”.  It’s a play by Robert Lepage.  There’s only one actor that does all the characters and they use lights, holograms, projections, things like that to create the settings on the stage.  Robert Lepage used to be the actor in the play but now it’s Yves Jacques, who is a brilliant actor from Montréal.  I saw the play last year and it was utterly brilliant.

So that’s that.  Hope you’re doing great !

Hugs
Véronique wink

Ciao, my guardian angel, smile
how are you?
I hope you’re well, I saw the trailer for Somers Town and I immediately liked Thomas Turgoose very nice and symphathetic, reminds me my eldest son who has about his own age, even the plot of the film is very interesting because it concerns the lives of teenagers is not an easy time of life, especially if children are not monitored by parents at this stage of life can be mistakes that are paid for life (a bit like success to me that I did not wanted to continue my studies school).
I also love the setting of the film, because the atmosphere of British cities attracts me, but I do not like fog, rain and greyness that often characterize, although in certain occasions I find they are mysterious and magical (about you’ve read the books of black magic and how are they? are appalling?).
I like very much the British homes, large, white or brick red, with that particular type of windows that does not exist in Italia, the garden green grass shaved, with the wooden fence around the mailbox that seems to Mickey Mouse, in short a dream ... I’d love to see the white cliffs of Dover, they are very suggestive!
Maybe one day I might be able to visit these places, but I fear the plane and I do not think that there is another means of transport to get there, so I continue to dream as I usually do.
I learned that the illustrator Sophie Blackall focuses of books for children and I think I like it for shure!

A rain of kissssseeeeesssss!!!!!

Hi Mika! I’m a big fan for Brazil who is just getting to know more about your music now… I just love how you sound and would love to see you perform.  I lived in London from 2003 to 2005 but didn’t know you back then.  About your post, I totally understand how you feel in a place without windows, because there was a time in London where I used to start work very early when the sun was rising (winter time) and finish work when it was already dark.  I believe you must be really hardworking and don’t want to leave the studio even for 5min, but I suggest that you take some breaks during the day and go outside, look at the sky, look at the people, go for a walk, have a fag(if you smoke), have a snack (don’t eat in the studio, try to take it to a park). All this might even be helpful and inspire you even more.  Love, from a Brazilian friend XXXXX Vanessa

Hi Mika,
Great blog thanks.
So Madonna eh?
How was?
I hear some not so good reviews or is that just usual nonsense?
I loved her in the 80’s so much when every girl like me wanted to don the lace gloves and hundreds of bracelets.. one of my friends Claire looked so like her too, even down to the facial freckle!
Huh some people have all the luck.
I knew she would last then and remembering saying to folk quick to put her down as a ‘flash in the pan’ ..
oh do you remember them and their hit!
Can you remember it?
I do!!

For example, writing Big Girls after watching a late night TV show. All I ever look for is a phrase or sentence that I can build something around.”

Just to say:
you’re right to work this way, that’s the reason why I believe that your writting is one of the best I ever heard, and goes right with the melodies you are composing. Maybe that’s why so many people find a balance in their lifes because off your art.

I love the theatre, don’t get to see as much as I’d like these days, but I know what you mean when you talk about coming out of seeing a production which was brilliant and feeling totally ‘smug’!  An epic 9 hours in one go would be SERIOUS smugness and feeling virtuous!!

The film looks great, will need to check that out.

How was the Madonna gig?  Did you enjoy it?  She’s not my cup of tea at all (her best stuff was much earlier in her career IMHO).  Whenever I hear her or see a video of her recent stuff I’m afraid I roll my eyes or yawn and see tumbleweed rolling by….Anyway, never mind what I think, as long as you had a good time.

Lovely to hear from you BTW.  Hope the creative (writing) juices are flowing!!

I’m sure it was an excellent play, but there would have to be extremely comfy seats to get me to sit for 9 hours.
And I would love top see Somers Town, seen the trailers and it looks brilliant. Now I have transport (FINALLY!)I’ll have to find a cinema showing it.
Hope Madonnas show was good,(bet it wasn’t as good as Katys, you missed a good ‘un, hope you’ll be at Scala showing your support), I heard the sound was bad, people asking for refunds.

Hi Mika,

you’ll can take some breaks and go and sit in the sun for a fwe minutes to get away from the dark studio and brighten you up smile

I’ve always wanted to go and see Cirque Du Solei but it’s never been here where I live. That play sounds good, it’s wonderful when you can sit down, relax and just be so deep into something that’s interesting.

You always give great tips about movies that I tend to like, to bad that Somers Town only premieres the 3rd of october here :(

Sinon j’espère que t’as passé unne bonne soirée avec Madonna! = )

@ pluuuuche!

Thank you for your new blog Mika!  I really admire how you are always so enthusiastic about other artists and performers, and that you are willing to let them inspire you.
But I also want to mention that it’s not a good idea to only have your new DVD on Blue Ray.  Most of us haven’t got Blue Ray, but we ALL want to buy your DVD.  Please release it on the normal DVD format as well, or you won’t sell anywhere near as many as you COULD do, and you will disappoint a lot of fans.
Love always from Marilyn.

This show must be fantastic!
Lucky you are to see Madonna!
I wish i can go to see her here in Portugal, but the tickets are too expensive to me at this moment.

Good work in studio to you. At this moment I do´n’t like to be you. I love the sunshine portuguese days for not see them so much time!!!

Nice blog. I’ve been working in a windowless, basement lab for the past few years. The hardest thing is not knowing what the weather is like outside.

I’m not a fan of Madonna’s music but I highly recommend Coldplay’s Viva la Vida concert, which I recently saw in Las Vegas. Ka cirque du Soleil was amazing too!

Robert Lepage

Is

A

Genius

Period

Seriously he is…

But I must correct you though.  The Moulin à Images, Robert Lepage’s installation on the silo, is Québec City, not in Montréal.  It is to celebrate Québec City’s 400th anniversary, not the province of Québec.

You should’ve waste your money on the “research trip” though ! Québec City is GORGEOUS and there are so many things to do there this year with all the celebrations for the 400th anniversary.  I went to the Paul McCartney concert on the Plaines d’Abraham and it was an out of this world experience.  I wanted to go see Robert Lepage’s Moulin à Images but the night I was supposed to go it was raining like crazy and a very cold night and I had no coat with me, no umbrella so I couldn’t go… I am GUTTED that I missed it !!!! I know quite a lot of people who went to see it and apparently it’s BRILLIANT !!!

Oh well if you decide to go see it, you have to make a stop in Montréal, it’s actually nice and warm in the summer, not like when you tour here !!  and Montréal is always lots of fun and very inspiring… but you do know that right ?

Well, enjoy Madonna’s gig and it was nice to hear from you and nice to see you love an artist from my city, makes me very proud !

Hugs and lollies to you
Véronique wink

Hello there,
lol I never would have hoped to be posting as many comments lol but here I am since I admire Robert Lepage soooooooo much!  Unfortunately I never got the chance to see his live shows (I will for sure though) but I saw that movie he did and also I followed his work in the LNI (the improvisation national league) done in Montreal, that is still working but he was there back in time.  And he did a great job with Peter Gabriel who worked with him too.  He’s a visionary, well, beyond that.  Undescribable actually hehe! I didn’t get the chance to see his silo emplacement in Quebec city, I will as soon as I can though smile!  I’ve always admired what he’s done, he always went his way no matter what people were saying….and I admire that in people smile!

And since I’m here Mika, about your studio video, smile reminds me of the times I was working in radio smile *sighs* the console looks pretty much like the one we used while I was studying!

Ok before I load this page I wish good night everyone!

And thanks for bringing Robert Lepage up dear smile

Good day or good night ya all!

Isabelle

Yay! A new blog!

Wow, a 9 hour play! But it must have been totally worth it!  Robert Lepage worked with Cirque Du Solei on Ka? I have always wanted to see a Cirque de Solei show but have never had the chance to.

Can’t wait for the new album =]

Thanks for sharing Mika smile
